Provisional Ball

Article 18 of 31 about the 2019-Rules of Golf draft:

“Provisional ball”

This is part 18 (of 31) in a series of blogs about some of the proposed changes to the
Rules of Golf effective as of January 1st 2019. Focusing on rules regarding playing a Provisional Ball.

18. PROVISIONAL BALL

The Rules about when and how to play a provisional ball are upheld.
Thus, also under the proposed 2019-Rules of Golf you are allowed to play a provisional
ball, if the ball might be…

1. … out of bounds.

2. … lost anywhere else than in a penalty area (i.e. “Water hazard” under the current
Rules).

In the proposal it seems like you must say the word “provisional”, for it to be a provisional
ball. Under the current Rules of Golf, you must either say the word “provisional” or in any
other way make it clear, that it is a provisional ball. Maybe the new Handbook will clarify
this issue.
