Every Golf Club has one, if they don’t, they should!
Some clubs have more than one – depending on who you ask.
But what is it that makes an event – ‘The Event of the Year’?
This weekend I am at Chigwell Golf Club, where I reside as a member. At the club we have several very well attended events throughout the course of the year.
This weekend, however, marks ‘The Welply Bowl.’
Over the last two years I have been unfortunate enough to miss this event, as it takes place across a Friday, Saturday & Sunday. After rave reviews I made sure not to make it a Hat-Trick.
The Welply Bowl was firmly in the Calendar Early on in the year.
It’s a Thursday afternoon, the competition is due to kick-start tomorrow and the club is full!
I am sat in the clubhouse, looking out at the course. I can’t help but wonder what makes ‘The Event of the Year’?
A word from our General Manager, Ben Driver:
“Since arriving at Chigwell GC 18 months ago, I knew then that The Welply Bowl was a key date in the diary. As a boarded competition, it’s one every member wants to win and is shown by the number of entrants being regularly 90+. In the weeks and days before the tournament, there’s a buzz around the Club and the anticipation builds. What makes the tournament unique to the Club is that it’s played over 3 days, with many members playing their Friday round before or after work. The top 20 and ties make it through to the Sunday, before the eventual winner decided. After a rainy June, the weather seems to be turning in our favour and thanks to the work of our greenkeeping team, the course is in fantastic condition. Good luck to all members and competitors!”
A word from a member:
“it’s a competition that gets you as close to a tour event with the cut on the Sunday. The atmosphere in the clubhouse after each round is great as players gradually hand in their scores and the whiteboard is updated, so people know where they are in the standings. Even if you’ve had a nightmare on the Friday you know you still have Saturday to get yourself back into contention. It’s the competition that everyone wants to win!”

You can’t get a better view than from those involved.
It goes without saying that I can’t wait to take part. With the Pros playing this weekend at the BMW International in Germany, I’ll be out on the course for at least 2 days, hopefully a 3rd, competing with them in mind.
The difference in competition, as Chris Campbell mentioned, is knowing how consistent you must be across an entire weekend. Time and time again we watch the leaderboard of tour competitions and the ups and downs throughout the weekend.
For us at Chigwell, this weekend will see around 90+ golfers compete for the Trophy, with only the top 20 & ties making it through to the Sunday.
The pressure is on and of course, we all want to win, but making the cut is the first step!
One thing is for sure, the 19th Hole will be dangerous for any early leaders on Friday evening. We will have to see how well they resist basking in early glory.
To be continued…
Keep an eye out on our social channels as the competition unfolds and I look forward to sharing my own views on
